The historically valuable STIB site between the Haachtse Steenweg, the Koninklijke Sinte-Mariastraat and the Rubensstraat in Schaerbeek currently houses 'Les Ecuries van de Tram' and still functions as a tram depot. The location is part of the Pogge (Renovas) neighborhood contract.

During several months, students developed a master plan and architectural elaboration of the building block.

After an analysis of the neighborhood, interviews with residents, Renovas, Entrakt, STIB/STIB, schools and neighborhood organizations, a program was determined and a master plan of the site was drawn up.

STABLES & TRAMS

The tram depot is playfully integrated into the urban fabric of Schaarbeek. After thorough research through a masterplan, the trams are redistributed on the premises. The main building becomes a cultural hub. A large expo hall with a restaurant overlooking Schaarbeek connects to a creative workshop and atelier. The vacant upper floors house large greenhouses and public gardens, as well as a public square with viewports into the tram depot, providing natural light. The large staircase connecting the ground floor and the public square seconds as an outdoor theater for the residents of Schaarbeek.
